Fantasma Boca (2023) is an immersive sound performance by artists Vivian Caccuri and Thiago Lanis.
Using only lips, mouths and teeth, the duo recreates the soundscape of a tropical forest: noises of birds, mammals and insects, but also of wind, water and other beings are re-enacted from the bodies of the performers. The sounds are live recorded, edited and played back live using a surround sound system and loops, weaving different layers of a nocturnal scene that transforms over the course of the performance.
This entire sound universe also echoes an absence. The work is based on the south-east of Brazil, an urban centre where the forest almost no longer exists. Within the city, our only contact with the old forests is ghosts, and the sounds of the performers on stage reflect this absence.
‘We come from big cities where forests are no longer present, so we want to establish a sound dialogue with their ghosts, with the spectral past that lies behind the absence of the forest,’ explains Vivian Caccuri.
The performance has been developed in a residency at iii instrumenti inventors at Den Haag, the Netherlands, in 2023.
The execution at Fondazione Antonio Ratti will be the première of Fantasma Boca in Italy.
The performance will be presented at Ocean Space, Venice, on May 10th.
Participation is free with compulsory reservation of eventbrite.
