Isabelle Carbonell - Medusa’s Mirage: A Tidal Opera – Video Installation
An eco-surrealist three-channel film installation unfolding over the timeframe of a tidal cycle of twelve hours. This work explores how the Mar Menor lagoon, a beachside paradise in southeastern Spain, is also the site of accumulating and devastating environmental violence. Bringing together original footage, archival and animated media collage, experimental sound design and music, this work challenges its viewers to “stay with the trouble”— to learn to attune to a type of slow violence, to decenter the human, and rethink different possible futures.

The installation will be on view until Sunday 23rd at 8pm

Fala da Terra [Voice of the Earth] (2022) is the most recent project of the duo that presents the work of Coletivo Banzeiros, a theater group composed by the members of the Landless Rural Workers' Movement (MST, in the Portuguese acronym) that live and work in rural and urban areas of Marabá and Paraupebas, in the southeast of Pará. Based on a traditional and rural imagery, Fala da Terra chants through their work the importance of cooperation and collectivity among farmers and actors, both in the fields and in the dressing rooms. The enemies are represented by archetypes: the shepherd, the governor, the hitmen, the airplane and the statue in the department store. In this allegory of social types, the drama of the current Brazilian political dispute is set, as if we could see it all there, staged.
