Cesare Pietroiusti shows some of his performances in relation to a series of dialectic oppositions (good/evil, production/fruition, satisfaction/deprivation and so on). Starting with the hypothesis that contemporary white western people refuse a certain multiplicity of being, he illustrates how they regularly split their internal contradictions and identify themselves with only one part of them, consigning the other one to an “extern” which they recognize time after time in an individual, a behaviour, a population or a cultural trait. Only at these conditions they are capable of producing relations, that are confrontations with an alterity of which they actually participate, without knowing that not to solve in a logical and linear manner his contradictions is a form of wealth, not of deficit. “The interrogation, doubt, asking oneself a question without giving oneself an answer - all of this carries out a function of integration, and not of disintegration”.

Cesare Pietroiusti (b. Rome, 1955) is an italian artist and professor. He founded the Centro Studi Jartrakor of Rome and the Psicologia dell’Arte magazine. He was coordinator of Oreste residency program and co-curator of CSAV in Fondazione Ratti. Member of the Lu Cafausu collective, he is professor at IUAV in Venice and at Lesley University in Boston. His works were exhibited at Serpentine Gallery of London (1992), Venice Biennale (1990, 1999, 2003), at MaMbo in Bologna (2008) and at Athens Biennale (2009).
