Workshop on Workshops
SYMPOSIUM
20–21 November 2015
FAR – Villa Sucota
Workshop on Workshops was a two-day symposium. Realized in the framework of the 20th year of the CSAV – Artists' Research Laboratory, the aim of this first appointment was to discuss and question existing models for art education and artistic practice.
In recent years, residencies, workshops, alternative exhibition spaces, temporary and/or informal schools have become part of the contemporary art map, expanding the variety of its formats and extending the geography of its borders. Invited exponents from international institutions - artists and curators - focused on discussing post-academic research within an artistic practice in the context of residency programmes, workshops, and alternative educational practice. The debate revolved around the experience of individuals, collectives, institutions dedicated to autonomous contemporary art production, where the thought was posited within a space of development, flexibility and permeability.
Simultaneously the workshop reflected on the dimension of learning as a central process in the art field in order to rethink the borders and the contexts of institutions.
Invited contributors: Andrew Berardini (Writer/Lecturer Mountain School of Art, Los Angeles), Teresa Gleadowe (Curator and writer/Founder of the Cornwall workshops), Jakob Jakobsen (Visual artist/Political and educational organizer), Joan Jonas (CSAV artist/Professor Emerita at MIT, Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Angie Keefer (Artist and writer), Marta Kuzma (Rector Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm), Matt Mullican (CSAV artist/Professor at HFBK, Hamburg), Roberto Pinto (Professor at Università di Bologna/former CSAV curator) and Dirk Snauwaert (Director Wiels, Brussels).
