Maximilien Durand is Curator and Director of the musée des Tissus, musée des Arts décoratifs de Lyon where he started in May 2011.
A graduate of the Ecole du Louvre, Maximilien Durand was the head of preventive conservation and restoration of the Musées des Arts décoratifs in Paris (musée des Arts décoratifs, musée de la Mode et du Textile, musée de la Publicité and musée Nissim de Camondo). As such, he organized numerous exhibitions on textiles and published several works or articles on Coptic and Byzantine fabrics. He has worked at the Musée du Louvre for several years, in the Coptic section of the Egyptian Antiquities department. His work at the Arts décoratifs has also developed his knowledge of decorative arts and design, of the materials that constitute them, and of collections relating to these art forms.
In parallel to his work in museums, he has been teaching at the Ecole du Louvre for many years and in various institutions, has sat on jury panels for the second year Master examinations (Ecole du Louvre, Paris I – Pantheon – Sorbonne, Institut national du patrimoine, University of Lyon II – Lumière). His bibliography (books, articles, and notices) covers three fields: textiles, the history of relics, and Christian iconography as well as an understanding of materials and their restoration.
